Your webmaster took these two photos at Pomona on July 9, 1961.  Not great quality, but they show little-known mid-pack contenders in action during a classic early 1960s main event.
 

Jim Chaffee in the "Pink Elephant" leads "Mystery Car" #37.  I remember these two cars battling through much of the race

It looks like Chaffee just blew the "Pink Elephant's" engine.  Maybe he only lost a water hose and that vapor spewing out from under the hood is just steam.  He's leading Chuck Willis's Devin-Jaguar.  Note KTTV truck -- I wonder if tape of this race exists somewhere in their archives?
