| Charles Nearburg from
Dallas, TX, on his way to victory in the rare and beautiful Lancia D24.
In Turn 5 he leads Rick Hall's 1950 equally rare Talbot Lago T26, and Noel
Park's 1955 4400 cc. (265cid) V8 powered Corvette.
Another Lancia D24, #76,
sat in the pits and didn't compete.
Since I know almost nothing
about Lancia sports/racers I asked historian David Seielstad if he could
give us a little background on the cars. Here's what he had to say:
"The Lancia sports D24
and D25 and D20 (GT) cars were all V6s. The D50 GP car was a V8.
When the racing team folded
Ferrari got all the GP cars (nine) except one (0004) that was kept by Lancia
and is now in the Biscarti (sp?) Museum. Ferrari modified them out of recoginition
then scrapped them. Some of these engines survived and have been
built into replicas.
Lancia kept the sports
cars (D24 and D25) and scrapped all of them. The engines survived and recently
a bunch of fake D24s have been built. #80 is one of the fakes.
However, McCaw's #76 is the real deal. It is the sole surviving
D24 (0005) that I know of. I don't know why it wasn't raced
on Saturday." |
