1966-72 Production Cars Over 2500 cc.  "Big Block Production"

This year's "Monterey Historics" lacked the popular event for Formula One cars.  In their place appeared a new and interesting class that hadn't run here before:  16 427 and 454 Corvettes were pitted against 2 427 Cobras and 2 tricked out (but underpowered in this league) Porsche 911 variants.

Mac Archer was the class of the field in practice, and qualified first.  He led from the pole position... John Morton was the fastest of the Corvettes.  He challenged Mac for the lead braking for Turn 2...
Rob Walton won the event in his ex-Penske Grand Sport Roadster. Lawrence Bowman's 1969 Corvette "Rebel" in full Confederate Regalia.
Tom Armstrong finished 3rd in his Grand Sport. John Goodman's red-white-and-blue star-spangled All-American entry finished 9th.
"Fast" Phil Currin was running with the leaders... Mac was putting on a show for the spectators, letting other cars pass him and then repassing them at will...
