Riverside:  September 21-22, 1957

Bob Norton contributed these photos of this, the very first Riverside event.

Mexican prodigy Ricardo Rodriguez stunned Californians with his win in the event for modified cars under 1500 cc.

He was 15 at the time and drove a Porsche 550RS.  He went on to a sports car racing and Formula I career.

Carroll Shelby climbs out of John Edgar's Maserati 450S #4506 after crashing into the earthen bank.

Shelby sustained a nasty facial gash in the incident.

Steen Carlson passes in #137, a Mercedes-Benz 300-SL "Gullwing" coupe.

Course workers remove the damaged Maserati.  Great tow truck!  Shelby returned to Riverside with the 450S to win the SCCA National event held on November 17th.
