"Carroll Shelby in Allen Guilberson's Ferrari 375MM at Torrey Pines,
July 9/10 - 1955."
(7-22-09) From author and historian Michael
T. Lynch:
"Very important Ferrari. Won Nurburgring in 1953, the first
year of the Sports Car World Championship, with Ascari and Farina.
Ran the Mexican road race with Chinetti and De Portago that year.
Sold to Carlos Braniff (Mexican National, nothing to do with Braniff Airways)
who raced it a Bergrstom AFB in 54. Then sold to Allen Guiberson,
who put Phil Hill in the car at March Field and the Carrera Panamerica
(2nd in both in 54). Then Guiberson engaged Carroll Shelby who won
at Ft. Pierce, Eagle Mountain and Torrey Pines in 55. Ken Miles drove
it at Seattle that year (3rd). Finally to Lou
Brero who ran three races at Nassau in 1955. Brero was killed
in a race in Hawaii the next year and the car was stored in rather bizarre
circumstances for three decades. Now owned by Bruce McCaw who provided
the car to Phil Hill, who won his last victory with it at the Monterey
Historics." |
