Notes on the Stockton Photos

I was rummaging through old photo stuff on the night of October 2nd, 2000, and found some 35mm negatives that I didn't recognize.

I looked closely, and saw interesting-looking photos from the Stockton races held on April 14-15, 1962.  Many of the photos showed cars & drivers already featured on this website.

Also noteworthy were that many photos of the photos were of Monterey-area drivers.

Here's Monterey's Bill Wellborn in his Porsche.

I don't remember taking these pictures, and I didn't have a 35mm camera.  I took plenty of photos at these Stockton races (shown elsewhere on the site) with my medium-format Voigtlander.

Did a fellow Monterey Peninsula race fan loan me his or her camera?

These mysterious negatives were in my storage locker, unknown and undisturbed, for 38 years.   They acquired a peculiar color balance, almost a patina, with the passage of time.  This, along with the high back-light used on the earlier pages, leads to the unusual, almost painting-like appearance of these photos.

Here's the start of the Class "F" Production race.  Car #102 is Stockton resident Jack Woodard.

#275 is Miles Gupton, who later drove an RS Porsche and created the "Platypus" Special.

Note the green lushness of Spring in California as shown in these photos.

By the end of May this grass would be the familiar dried-out gold color.
