Bob Engberg's Palm Springs Photos -- 4

More of Bob photos.

Pat Pigott's Lotus Mk.XI "LeMans" in the pits at Palm Springs.  Can anyone identify the two gentlemen walking by?

"Here is the BMW-Veritas that was owned by Walter Roach. He had spent the night before placing a Fiat V8 in the car, only to have it overheat during the race. A young looking Fred Puhn stands on the left looking concerned. Fred went on to build the Santee and the Quasar race car. I think he even won a SCCA National Championship in DSR in one of his Quasars."

"This Lotus has an interesting history. It was a Lotus MK VIII and was ordered up by actor James Dean, who planned to put and Offy engine into it. Dean died before he took full delivery and the car ended up in the hands of John Timanus. A few months later the Lotus MK XI came out and made this car almost obsolete. Timanus ran a variety of engines in the car and eventually was running a supercharged engine (Climax?) that put the Lotus in Class F,where he would not be racing against Frank Monise or, worse yet, against Pete Lovely in 1100cc Elevens. Timanus also modified the body after a year or two, cutting off the rear and calling it a MK 10, or "Lotus Manx." It was eventually sold to Stan Peterson (who installed B.O.P. V8 power). I have heard from the Lotus MK 8/10 Lotus registrar that an unscrupulous dealer recently sold the chassis to one person and other parts to another, so now there are two of these cars, one in Japan and the other in Belgium, each claiming to be the one in the photo."
