Bob Engberg's Palm Springs Photos -- 3

More of Bob's Photos.

From Bob:  "The cars are a little hard to see, but this photo gives a general view of Turns One and Two. Bob Drake is leading Ken Miles by about a second here and went on to win the April '57 race. I remember the crowd was really into it and cheering and taking photos. Quite a race!"

"This black-and-white grainy photo shows a  Lotus XI "LeMans" that has an interesting local San Diego history. The car was originally owned and raced by Skip Conklin, who'd bought it directly from Chamberlain and raced successfully for several years. The Palm Springs race was one of his first but as he got more experience was fast and reliable enough to win Class G
regional SCCA championships in the car. Monise was faster but Conklin evidently finished more races. The car was also raced by San Diegan Max Gordon and finally ended up in the hands of its current owner, who has had the car stored in a Southern California garage where it's been "hidden" for the past 20 years."

"Here is another of the pretty Abarth 207A cars They only made eight or so, plus a coupe, and three of them were in Southern California racing during the late fifties. This car is shown approaching turn one."
