Bob Engberg's Palm Springs Photos -- 2

More of Bob's photos.  These show Lotus cars in action.

"Jay Chamberlain leading a Porsche 550. Chamberlain's red Lotus Eleven was probably the car tested for the Road & Track 1956 article about the new Elevens. Chamberlain was appointed West Coast distributor for Lotus cars and raced for Team Lotus at LeMans . In one LeMans race (I think it was '57) he crashed one of the Team cars and was thrown out on the racetrack, to be pulled off it by a French photographer just before a D-Jag sped by. Chamberlain eventually had a falling-out with Colin Chapman over business policies of Lotus and quit all his driving and dealings with Chapman, moved away from LA and established a car dealership in New Mexico. If the second car is John Porter's Porsche (I can't tell for sure from the photo) then it too was a Road & Track test car."

"Leon Miller, here leading Pigott's Lotus, bought his Lotus XI "Club" from Jay Chamberlain whose dealership was across the street from the Burbank studios where Miller worked. It was a "Club" model with drum brakes and solid rear axle, and the "LeMans" Elevens should have been faster. Miller was a good driver and in this race (April "57?) he won class G ahead of
Pigott and Monise.  (The Miller car is the one later owned and driven by Don Maslin as the
so-called "Wotus Bwossom" that he was to run for many years in San Diego SCCA events.  Miller's son Bob lives here in San Diego and is a photographer who loves the old cars and the vintage races."

"Another shot of Pigott's Eleven shown lining up for the first turn."
