Bob Oker -- Aston Martin DBR2

Veteran Southern California driver Oker was a non-starter in this factory-entered Aston Martin

(3-9-11)   From Bill Oker:   (Son of Bob Oker)

"Dad qualified 4th for the race...beating out Dan Gurney in the Arciero 4.9 Ferrari in 5th...as well as several other noted drivers. Roy Salvadori qualified 8th in the DBR1 and my understanding is that this didn't sit well with David Brown. It wouldn't look good for his factory driver to get beaten by an amateur local boy from Southern California (Dad was 29). The DBR2 suddenly suffered an "electrical" problem and...Hmmmm...wouldn't start on Sunday...??

The story goes on. Dad did drive the DBR2 one more time at Santa Barbara placing 3rd overall...his trophy for that race somehow wound up for sale on E-Bay recently...!! I'm not sure how many more times the car ran in the States. I know Roy drove it at Pomona and Moss drove it at the 1959 Riverside Times Grand Prix both to a DNF I believe. He (Moss) did win at the Bahamas and then the car went back to England. And as I think you also know...Gregg Whitten has the car today and runs it in the Historic
races...Laguna...Coronado...etc..."
