Note big fogbank blowing in off of Monterey Bay.  It brought an ice-cold wind -- surprising to non-natives for mid-August.

The reason for this bone-chill is the famed Monterey Bay canyon, which drops quickly into the oceanic abyss offshore.  Extremely cold water from the deep canyon and warm summer air from inland meet, and their collision creates the cold wind and persistent coastal fog that defines summer on the Monterey Peninsula.
