Ed Matsuishi's Photos: (4)  S.F. Examiner's "Pacific Grand Prix" -- Oct. 22-23, 1960 at Laguna Seca!

From Ed:  "We had two Tipo 61 Birdcage Maseratis, a new one for Carroll Shelby, and an ex-Camoradi LeMans car for Jim Jeffords.  Jeffords' car had a long tail and weird windshield that started way down the front hood (they had increased the requirement for windshield height and this was Maserati's fix to meet the new regs).  The race at Laguna Seca was Shelby's last as a driver before he retired and went on to build the Cobra.  His heart was giving him a lot of pain so he was taking a lot of nitroglycerin.  He gained enough points to win the USAC Cham- pionship for Sportscars at that race."

(2-5-11)   From Scott Sperka:

"I just ran across the 5 pages of Ed Matsuishi's photos of the West Coast and European paddocks, pits, races and they are remarkable!  Also totally amazing is that they were taken while he was a mechanic for the Maseratis and a traveling friend of Phil Hill.  Please give Ed my sincerest gratitude for digitizing them, choosing to post them, and for sharing his very unique experiences with us all.  We have gotten a very rare and unique view into racing in a most wonderful era of each venue he has exposed to us.  Thank you, so much!!
